Still have questions? Ask us and we'll respond shortly.
Can I still apply next quarter if this doesn't work for my schedule right now?
Yes! We organize groups on a quarterly basis, so you can start at the beginning of any quarter. Just let us know and we'll send you an e-mail when we open applications for the next quarter.
I don't have much experience teaching kids / teaching in general. Should I still apply?
If that's your only concern, then go for it! We provide basic training before you teach (and additional hands-on workshops during the quarter) so that you feel comfortable using our books and working with a small group of kids. An experienced team lead will also be there to manage the classroom and answer any questions you might have.
I like the idea of teaching, but I don't feel so confident about math. Should I still apply?
Don't worry if math isn't your best subject! We cover 1st-4th grade, so the most advanced topics you'll need to know involve counting groups of frogs and splitting 20 cookies equally between 4 kids. We think you'll be fine if you got into Stanford, but here is a sample textbook page (courtesy of SingaporeMath.com) if you need reassurance.
Can I get paid for working with Math Magic?
Students who are eligible for Federal Work Study can be paid for teaching and commute time (about 2 hours per teaching day). Check whether you're eligible and fill out an authorization form here.
I might have to miss a few days because of other commitments this quarter. Is that okay?
We understand that academic life is extremely demanding at Stanford. While we can manage if an instructor absolutely needs to miss a day of Math Magic during the quarter, we want to be clear that our volunteers are expected to make Math Magic a priority over non-mandatory or preventable conflicts like belated studying for a midterm. Instructors commit to teach the same group of kids over the course of a quarter so you can build trust and effective teaching strategies. In any case, be sure to let your team lead know as soon as you expect a scheduling conflict, at least 48 hours in advanceso we can potentially arrange for a substitute.
How do I get more involved?
Whether you're interested in team leading, applying for a position on our leadership team, or helping out in general, let us know here or talk to your team lead! We are always looking to expand what we do, and we know you have something special to contribute (whether that's recruiting, community outreach, media and publicity, web development, or planning awesome social events!).
